Shakespeare's late Roman tragedy follows Caius Martius, Rome's fiercest soldier, who earns the name Coriolanus by capturing the Volscian city of Corioles. His contempt for the common people wrecks his run for consul, and when he is banished he joins his old enemy Aufidius and marches on Rome. Only his mother, Volumnia, can turn him back. Parker's edition includes a long introduction on Shakespeare's use of Plutarch, the play's likely date of 1608, and its staging at the Blackfriars theatre, along with detailed notes on the text.
